About Ridgefield Community Gleaners
Who are the Ridgefield Community Gleaners? We are an all-volunteer, non-profit organization serving the community of Ridgefield, Washington. We collect donated produce, which might otherwise go unused, from area gardens and fruit trees during the growing season. We also purchase produce from local grocery stores and invite donations of produce from local growers throughout the year. We have partnered with the Ridgefield Family Resource Center to distribute the nutritious produce we collect or purchase to the families they serve.
We began, in 2017, with the realization that thousands of pounds of fruit from local trees and hundreds of pounds of locally grown produce go unharvested every year and wanted to find ways to reduce food waste and alleviate hunger in our community. Taking inspiration from other regional non-profits, we formed our own 501(c)(3) and began building a network of generous local gardeners and growers. Our vision is for Ridgefield-grown fresh produce to go to Ridgefield families in need.
Food insecurity needs are year round so, in 2019, we began on-going fundraising efforts to support weekly purchases of fresh produce from area businesses. We purchased over 4800 pounds of produce in 2020 and over 1900 pounds so far in 2021. You can make a tax deductible donation to support the purchase of fresh produce. Mail checks payable to RCGA, 304 Riverview Drive Ridgefield, WA 98642.
Gardening season is just getting into gear, and many avid gardeners will soon have their crops in the ground, anticipating delicious summer bounty. We hope you will consider planting an extra row or a few extra plants to share with others in our community. Our volunteers pick up and, if requested, harvest produce from local gardens and fruit trees. Last year we collected over 2500 pounds of locally grown produce from over 21 gardens. Anyone who has extra harvest is encouraged to contact the Ridgefield Community Gleaners Association at [email protected]. You can also reach out to us through our Facebook page.
We are very grateful to be part of strengthening our community. Please join us in any way you can. We sincerely appreciate your participation and support.
